RANCID DRIPPING
A CONVICTION AND A FINE
In the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr E Page, S.M., A. E. Preston, pork butcher, was proceeded against for selling food which was unfit for human consumption. Tlie police stated that on account of complaints being received, Inspector Cowdrey went to the defendant’s premises in Manners street and purchased a pound of dripping which, upon being tested, was found to bo rancid and unfit for human consumption, Mr P. H. Putnam, who appeared for the defendant, in entering a plea of guilty, said that Preston was in a large way of business and had a number of shops. He was unable to give personal supervision to_ each shop, but he had issued instructions that nothing was to he sold that was not perfectly sound and wholesome. Inquiries had been made in respect to tho dripping in auestion,, and it was found that its condition could not he discovered until It had been heated or rendered down. Inspector Cowdrey stated that from its outward appearance the dripping seemed to be all right, but it smelt "very high.” lady tvTio bad made the complaint submitted some pastry she had made with tho dripping, and it smelt high. The dripping was decidedly rancid. Tho magistrate said it was probably an oversight on the part of the defendant in offering the dripping for sale, but an obligation was placed upon vendors to see that the goods they offered for sale were wholesome. A conviction would be entered and the accused fined £4 with costs.
