A PROFITABLE VISIT

CITY COUNCIL AND KARORI REPORT UPON RECENT OBSERVATIONS. A report upon the visit of inspection paid by the City Council on June 3rd to Karori was laid before the City Council last evening by the outlying districts committee. “EXCELLENT CONDITION." "We are pleased to state," commenced tbe committee, "that we found the roads generally in very fair condition, and many of them curbed and channelled. The late Mayor of Karori, Councillor Burn, pointed out the works the late borough had in contemplation and the various matters they had taken into consideration from tim® to time. After inspecting the roads, wo visited the Karon Park, the whole area was found ‘to lie in excellent condition. The plantation around the sides was good, although certain trees would have to be replaced. These were pointed out to the director oi parks and a-eserves, who will include whatever is necessary m this year's planting. , PUBLIC UTILITIES.

“The quarry was found in good order and condition, with ample supply of metaL for the district. (iood leserves had been provided for, owing to the £ood foresight of the late Borough Council. The late Borough Council also had under consideration the establishment of fresh water baths and children’s play areas. These matters were referred to the officers for future consideration. The aea of the district was outlined as far as the boundary could be seen, and. it was pleasing to note the large amount of ground available for future building. During the visit we were met by.a large deputation from the Karori Progressive League, who brought under our notice a proposal for altering the Old Karori Council Chambers into a public hall; also the need of rest parks for picnic purposes to be provided for the future. They suggested a certain site which has now a fine belt of pine trees at the back thereof. The owners of the property, who were introduced, intend to place an offer of this ground before the council, upon which _the officers can report at a later date, if necessary. It will also te necessary to obtain a report from cur officers as' to what, alterations, if any, are required at the council chamber, and what accommodation it will be necessary to leave for the department’s own requirements. The main points stressed by the deputation were for good access to the city an'd for water and drainage at as early a dsjto as possible. The visit was an enjoyable and profitable one, and the council’s knowledge of the city’s new area was thereby increased. “The late Borough Council rented a quarry at the I top of MaKara Hill for about £5 per annum. This enabled the roadway on the hill Side of the park to be metalled much more cheaply than by carting the metal up the hill from the quarry within the park area. It may be considered desirable to continue this arrangement. “The committee thanked the deputation ort behalf of the council, and promised that their requests will be placed before the council at the earliest opportunity." The report was received.
