PURCHASE OF SUPPLIES
FOR HOSPITAL BOARDS. In connection with tho activities of the Health Department in connection with the above, iti is notified in the “Journal of Public Health” that tho department’s indent has gone forward, and it is hoped shortly to advise those boards, who have-placed orders with the department when they can exp cut delivery of such orders. “In tho mean-time,”-it is said, “it is only necessary to add that in cases where boards have declined to come into the scheme tho department will most certainly require them to show that they are purchasing at least as cheaply as die department, and no doubt the ratepayers of the contributory local authorities will require the same assurance. Boards, therefore, should watch the action of their own officials and make certain that the department’s offer receives every consideration.”
At a meeting of the geological section of tho Philosophical Society last evening, held in the Dominion Museum, the chair was occupied by Mr G. H. Tittle/. About eighteen members wore present. Mr P. G. Morgan road two papers—“ Fossils of tho Mount Radiant sub-division, Karamea,” and “Notes on the Stratigraphy of the Coal Measures of tho Grcymouth and Westport Districts." At tho conclusion of the reading a discussion took place. Some geological specimens were exhibited. When tho volcano ICraknltoa blow itself to pieces, it killed 10,000 natives dwelling along the shores of tho Straits, in the middle of which, in a single night, it built up a brand-new mountain 25 miles m circumference and two miles high. The explosions were so tremendous as to bo mistaken at a distance of 2000 miles, for cannonading.
