COMMONWEALTH SHIPPING

POSITION OF AN GLO-ADSTE-ALI AN LINES. A recent telegram from Sydney (says a recent issue of the “.Morning- Post”) reported that General Eyrie, Assistant Minister for Defence, on the occasion of the launching of the steamer Eudunda. one of the State-owned ships of the Commonwealth Line, announced that the policy of the Commonwealth Government was to "cut out the enrichment of foreign companies in the Australian trade.” The suggested charge of profiteering thus conveyed was received with indignation by the Anglo - Australian Linos, which have, in good times end bad times, maintained communication between Great Britain and Australian ports. The P. and O. Company now state that they received the following message from Messrs Macdonald Hamilton and Co., their managing agents in Australia,:—'"Press cable stales P. and O, Company vigorously repudiate General Ryrie's imputation of profiteering in Anglo-Anstmlian trade. General desires us to inform you there must he a. mistake. He never made such a statement.”
