CHIEF STEWARDS’ GTTTLD HONOURS . MB McNICOL. •A pleasing function took place on the Union Steam Ship Co.’a steamer Moeraki yesterday, a handsome illuminated address being presented by members of the Chief Stewards’ Guild ‘to Mr N. McNicol, who recently retired from the position of chief of stores for tho com pany at Wellington. "The capable manner in which you have controlled tho various important positions you have been called on to administar-- tho outcome of your long and varied experience—will,” states the address, "no doubt bo rewarded by the knowledge that you leave behind a record of service which will serve as an example and a. stimulus to others- • . . Forty-four years ago you joined tho service of the Union Company, and havo since served under their flag, thirty-six years of which have bcon spent ashore. Although your length of service entitled jou to retire earlier, the fact that you remained at your duties since the outbreak of war and watched over the arrival and departure of the many red-funnel vessels, more often than in normal times, is but another tribute to those fine qualities with mhich you are endowed, and also reflects credit on the guild. The Chief Stewards’ Guild is united in wishing both you and sfrs McNicol all happiness and prosperity for fho future years.” Mr George Mellomild (chief of ’the Paloona) made the presentation on behalf of tho guild; and. referring to the large number of stewards who had boon associated with Mi McNicol, said that he had been practically the teacher of all stewards going through the company, and his -work had ■been of tho host All regretted his retirement, but would always hold pleasant : memories of their associations with him.
