THE DRIFTING HAVRE
STEAMER WHANGAPE UNABLE TO ASSIST.

Captain Ryan, of the steamer Whangape, on arrival at Newcastle, stated that he was asked for assistance by the Havre, but as he himself was short of coal owing to a delayed passage caused by heavy weather, ho could not render her any help. At the time a heiVy gale was blowing from the south-west. (Received June 9. 1.5 a.m.) SYDNEY. Juno 8. There is no further news of the steamer Havre'.
The steamer Havre, bound from Dunedin to Newcastle, reported by wireless on Saturday night that she was short of coal, having only just sufficient to .keep steerage way. She asked for assistance, and the tug Champion was dispatched from Sydney with coal. A later report stated that tha Havre was helplessly drifting.
