GENERAL BIRDWOOD

BIG RECEPTION AT CHRISTCHURCH. SOUND ADVICE TO COLLEGE BOYS. PER PBESS .ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH, Juno 8. General Birdwood was accorded a civic reception in tho Theatre Royal to-day. A very largo gathering was present, and tho proceedings were enthusiastic. This afternoon General Birdwood visited Christ’s College, where ho met with a fine reception. Later on, ho visited tho Chalmers Military Ward ab tho Hospital. Addressing the boys at Christ’s College, General Birdwood urged them to stick to tho traditions that, had, been formed, by their fathers, uncles, and brothers in the New Zealand Expeditionary Foroe, and to remember that tho questions of comradeship, loyalty, and initiative which had meant so much on Gallipoli tvould carry them through life. The future of the nation, ho said', depended ou the maintenance of a high moral. Let them make up their minds that they .would never allow what was happening in Riissia to take place in their own country. When the time came for. them to leave school they should go on playing in teams as they played at school, remembering the motto of Winchester College: ‘‘Manners make tho man,” and doing their best to help the lame dog over the stile. ’
