THORNDON BATHS
NOT TO BE CLOSED OPEN SO LONG AS USED, SAYS THE MAYOR. “The whole matter of the Thnrndon baths is in rather a nebulous state,’’ remarked the Mayor to a “Times” reporter yesterday when asked as to the council’s intentions in regard to that public institution. It will be rc- ' incmbrrcd that at the cud of March the council announced its intention ot closing the baths, as they were not a paying proposition, but a deputation of * residents of the district persuaded the authorities to allow it to remain
open. “The council has not yet selected nnv actual site for the proposed now baths.’’ said Mr Luke. ‘''Hie proposal we had for the installation of frosh water baths* at Thorntlon was abandoned by the council and representations have been made by the swimming community and those who use the salt water baths that the council should provide for the Thorndon district a more suitable structure. The locality has not yet been determined, and until we have the estimates to submit in connecting with the new loan prooosals -,vo are unable to make any further statement. In my opinion rhe loan ■schedule will contain proposals for very suitable baths at Thorndon to take the place of the ones tha* are to bo destroyed. ] “The present baths are certainly not in a very delightful condition, nor is the area "surrounding- them a very attractive one, but until the Harbour Board pushes on with further reclamation the present bog will continue to bo utilised. There is no intention on the part of the council to stop their use so long as the people avail themselves of tho bathing facilities provided.”
