LICENSING COMMITTEE

HOROWHENUA HOTELS. Special to the "Times." OTAKI, June 8. The annual meeting of the Otakl Licensing Bench was held at the Courthouse, Otaki, on Friday, when there were present—Messrs J. L. Stout, S.M. (in the chair), Ben. Ling. H. Freeman, Jas. McLeavey, T. H. Windley. and Wm. Tompeitt.

The following applications for publicans’ licenses were all" granted: —Chas. Jas. Walter, Telegraph Hotel, Otaki; Walter Sotheran, Family Hotel, Otaki; Annie Higgott, Jubilee Hotel, Otaki; John McGill, Railway Hotel, Otaki Railway; Thos. Quinn, Provincial Hotel, Upper Hutt; Thos. Patrick Lyons, Grand Hotel, Levin. . Renewals of licenses were granted to:— M. J. Suhan, Levin Hotel, Levin; -Thos. S. McGuire, Paekakarifci Hotel, Paekakariki; J. D. Howell, Central Hotel. Otaki. Transfers of licenses were issued in respect to the Telegraph, Jubilee, Family, and Railway Hotels, Otaki. A wholesale license was granted to Walter Bull, Levin.

.With, respect to the Family Hotel, Otaki, Constable Satherley stated that the back fire escapes had noit yet been fixed, but the matter would be attended to. It was intended to erect these of wood, hut he understood Mr Page. S.M , had ■ stipulated that the escapes should be of iron.

The license was granted, but the chairman said" the previous instructions with respect to the fire escapes must be complied ■yfjtlj, . , It Was states! that the police asked that the Central Hotel at Otaki should be repainted. Constable Satherley, in answer to a question, said the back portion of the hotel badly needed painting, but the front portion was not at all bad. Mr- Howell, the licensee had endeavoured to ,get the work done, but. it was difficult to , secure the necessary materials- Ho would get tho work done as Sbon. es. possible, . License; granted, the Bench being satisfied that the licensee had endeavoured to get improvements.effected. THE MANAKAU HOTEL, in dealing ydth tho application of Herbert James Aitken for a publican's license in rospect to the Manakau Hotel, Mr Ongley, who appeared for applicant, said that great, difficulty had been met with in regard to the erection of new premises. Only one tender had been received. . ■ ,It was decided to allow Mr Aitken to carry on .until tho next quarterly meeting. - ■■
