TENANTS’ PROTECTION
LEAGUE TO BE FORMED
POSITION SAID TO BE CRITICAL.
As a result of the housing meeting held ah the Town Hall last month under the organisation of a committee of Labour supporters it was announced that a Tenants’ Protection League would be formed. At the request of a largo number of ren't-payers, a meeting of all those interested' in the housing question is to be held, when the preliminary negotiations in connection with ilia formation, of tho body wilt bo discussed.
It is the idea of the conveners eihat the league shall be entirely' non-poli-tical and untrammelled by any other organisation. Tho special purpose of the body will l>e to advise and protect tenants who may he found in difficulties owing to hho extreme dearth of accommodation, so that they"- may act uniformly. A “Times” reporter was yesterday informed that during the past week o largo number of inquiries had been made at the Trades Hall by r people who had received notices of eviction and summonses for possession; also that instances of hardship arising out of the housing difficulty were being reparted in large numbers. It was thought that these instances alone jus-, tified tho formation of a Tenants’ Protection League. It has been pointed out by'_ the organisers -of the Labour housing campaign that in August next the War Regulations which give tenants a small measure of protection will he automatically repealed, thus rendering all tenants,' including returned soldiers and their dependents, liable to exorbitant'increases in rent and to eviction without any protection whatever.
