POPULATION AND WORK
—— : r": PROFESOR DAVID’S WARNING. "We hear a lot and wo talk a lot about immigration,” said Professor David at a meeting of the Victoria League in Sydney, “but we want to put our whole heart and soul the subject—to try to got as many people as. wo can of the right kind to come to this country. Think of us, only a few million, surrounded' by those teeming millions of Java, India', and China. It is a terrific menace. “Wo hear, too, of tho demand to shorten the hours of labour. Aloro power to those who try to ease the shoulders of the workers from their ! burdens. But we must not forgot that any country, if it is going to hold any high place amongst tho civilised countries of the world, must give absolutely of its best, and whatsoever its _ hand finds to do do that thing,to tho utmost of hand and mind. If wo shorten the hours of labour, and so acquire more leisure, I would suggest most strongly that the workers should have wider opportunities for education, so that we may have more intensive work. If horn’s are shortened wo must see to it that the change does not lessen production. Other countries ,aro going ahead. Germany is organising very carefully. AVe who have won victory cannot afford to rest on our laurels. Unless we give I our best strength during pcaco wo ■ shall fall hack instead of going forward.” ■
