SAMOAN OBSERVATORY

INTERESTING DETAILS. At a meeting of the astronomical section of the Wellington Philosophical Society, held at the Dominion Museum last night, Dr C.> E. Adams (Government Astronomer), who presided, read a paper .on the. Samoan Observatory, established at Apia (some five or six years ago by the University of Gottingen, Germany, and conducted during that period by Dr Angenheistor. The observatory, stated Dr Adams, was very well equipped and ingeniously arranged so an to avoid the interference of the great heat of the tropics and tropical insects with the various instruments and the scientific experiments and observations carried out; The observatory chiefly undertook magnetic and sciamological work. Professor Maraden also spoke on tho Work carried on by the observatory; and papers on “Tho Initial Radiation from a Nova’’ and “The High Vclooitios of tho Planetary Nebulae,” were road by Mr A. C. Gifford, M.A., F.R.A.S. All tho papers were of a very technical character.
