AMERICA AND MANDATE TURNED DOWN BY SENATE. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. WASHINGTON, May 31. The Senate by 43 votes to 31, rejected a motion to delay action on the question of tho Armenian mandate until the peace agreement with the Central Powers is reached. WASHINGTON, June 1. By an overwhelming vote, tho Senate resolved to refuse President Wilson’s request for power to accept the mandate, over Armenia. Irish women sympathisers created a scene in tho Senate galleries. , Hecklers demanded the expulsion of the English from Ireland. The ushers removed a dozen women, who struggled and shouted. The proceedings were suspended until tho ejections wero completed.
It was stated a few days ago that tho Senate Foreign Relations Committee, by 11 votes to 4, had refused to allow tho President power to accept the mandate ever Armenia. It was subsequently indicated that Congress was not likely to grant the request, on the ground that tho cost and responsibilities of undertaking the mandate were too great at tho present time.
