A number of Chinese and Hindus on board the Mahcno were searched bv tho Customs officers, just prior to the vessel leaving; for Sydney last week. Tlw law provides that not. more than £5 in gold, and an equal amount in silver, may be taken out of New Zealand by Asiatics, and it vrae with aview to ascertaining if Hindus or Chinese wero carrying more than' these amounts, that the search -was instituted. Tho officers found that, whereas »the Hindus only had the amount al-. lowed, ono Chinese exceeded it by £2,
another by £B, and a third by £l2. As a result of the search, the Consolidated Fund has benefited to the extent of £22, this representing £2O in silver and £2 in gold.
