MERCANTILE MARINE
GENOA CONFERENCE NEW ZEALAND NOT REPRESENTED. 0 By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, May 29. The International Labour Office of the League of Nations notifies that 21 States will attend the conference at Genoa on Juno Isth, to discuss matters particularly concerning the mercantile marine. The pflicial notice specifies a few States which will not intend, as tho questions have no inteiest to them directly. It singles out the abstention of Now Zealand as tho most remarkable, although the Domin. ion has replied to certain investigatory questions which were circulated. The notice describes tho special position obtaining yi New Zealand, owing to the arrangement between the New Zealand Seamen's Association and the Federation of Shipowners, and also other conditions. The' Japanese delegation will be extraordinarily large.
Referring to the abovo cable, Mr W. T. Young, general secretary of the New Zealand Seamen's Union, etated that he had written to Mr Haveloctt Wilson asking him to explain to the delegates how New Zealand was not represented. Mr Young said he received advice of the conference early in April through copies of letters Bent by the Prime Minister of Australia to the Australian Seamen's Union. On April 13th he received a circular from the International Labour Office, and Mr P. Eraser, M.P., immediately _ got into touch with the Prime Minister on the subject, but when a reply was received' from Mr Masscy in the second week in May, the Prime Minister stated lie had just received adviSe of the conference, and it was too late to arrange for a New Zealand _ delegate being sent. Mr Young considered it strange that the Prime Minister should say this, as Australia apparently had" advice of tho conference in March, and Mr Eraser brought the matter under the Government's notice in April. The matter would be dealt with further at the next meeting of the head office executive of the Seamen's Union.
