VITAL STATISTICS

BIRTHS, DEATHS, MARRIAGES. Returns prepared by the Deputy-Regis-, trar of Births, Deaths,, and Marriages (Mr W. IT. Gladstone) show that there havo been more births and marriages and fewer deaths in Wellington since the beginning of the present year than there were during the corresponding month of last year. Following are the figures for tho respective periods, last year's figures being given in parenthesis : —Births 970 (BGS;, deaths 410 (512), marriages 626 (432). One hundred and forty-three of the marriages this year were in the Registrar's Office —or nine more than in the first five months last year. Births 175 (227), deaths 83 (96), _ marriages 96 (86). The number of marriages in tho Registrar's Office this month was 26, as compared with 27 in May, 1919.
