Winter. June 33, 24, and 26—Hawke's Bav J.C. and Hawke’s Bav Hunt Winter. NOTES AND COMMENTS (By "Carbine.”) Dunedin meeting opens to-morrow. C Pritchard leaves Trentham for Otaki to-morrow with tho members ot his team which are engaged at the popular coastal fixture. The Wellington owner, Air H. Brown, has- bought Counter Attack from ■ Mr J. C. N. Grigg. Everyone who saw Luke race at Hawera and Wanganui was anxious to see the Acrostic gelding get away to Dunedin for the Steeplechase, at which hxture they gave him a great chance. He can bo kept in mind for events ahead. The well-bred Star Lady, who raced well a season or so back, and has ’the chief event at Woodville and a defeat of Afterglow to her credit, has been nominated ior the Caulfield Cup, It is reported from Sydney .that Mr T. H. Lowry has made arrangements to send Aurarius (dam of Desert Gold) to Australia to be mated with Ali Black (Desert Gold’s sire).
English exchanges mention that two prominent cross-country rmers in E. Piggo bt and Air J. B. Anthony contemplate retirement. Piggott is going in for training, and recently retused a place with 20 boxes because it was too small. Evidently his services are going to be in demand.
When Kennaquhair was eased up after winning City ‘ Tattersall's Cup it was understood he was to have a fairly lengthy spell. However, he reappeared on the training tracks at Randwick recently, and presumably is to be kept going with a view to the Prince of Wales’ Cup.
"The New Zealand-bred filly Fluency (says a recent Sydney "Referee”) had not started for some time, but somehow or other books and backers .'have a happy knack of anticipating a move for anything from W. Booth’s stable, and she was one of two at a short price soon after betting commenced on Tattersall’s Stakes. Kiikumon was the other. The latter quickly took charge, but at the half-mile was passed by Glencova, who led into the straight from Galaore, Fluency, and KUkumon. Fluency had charge a furlong from homo, but her backers pot a fright, as Sporran ran up to her a little later, and there was nothing between the two fifty yards from the judge’s box Then Sporran weakened, and Fluency beat him a half length. The winner, who is by Demosthenes from Los Vegas, raced in New Zealand prior to coming to Sydney, and was presented by Mr W. G. Stead to Mr O. R. Falkiner. Pavo showed pace for a few furlongs, while Narbonno, again, commencing slowly, did not after get near the front. Belinda and Ooldea also found the pace too fast throughout. Prince Marvelook ran on fairly, but ho is only ordinary.” '
Aeroplane travelling will probably become fashionable with bookmakers journeying to and from country meetings (says the Sydney "Referee”). ■ln Vic-, toria Messrs W. Mitchell and V. Nowhouse, two well-known members of the Victorian ring, went by aeroplane from Warrnambool to Colao, and from the latter town to Mornington. The distance between the last-mentioned two towns is about 110 miles, and that was covered in 55min. AUCKLAND ACCEPTANCES FOR STEEPLECHASE MEETING. AUCKLAND, Alay 29.
