INSTITUTE v." SOUTH WELLINGTON. AN INTERESTING- GAME. Despite the adverse weather conditions oa Saturday, quite a good number of spectators witnessed the game between the above clubs. Ths strong wind pre vented play of the accurate order, . yet good combination was evident .at limes, especially amongst tho Institute for; wards. The score, 3toX in favour ot Institute, by no means reflected the dit ferenco between the teams, Institute being superior in every department or the game. , . The first half was characterised by good defensive work on the part of the brothers Bell, for South Wellington, and poor shooting by the Institute forwards. Time and ap#in they took the hall up to within striking distance, but only registered one goal during the first spell, Houston heading through for a splendid centre by. Smith. Boss nearly notched , another goal from a free kick, the ball | striking the bar and going over. Institute 1, South Wellington 1. From now on Institute took matters in hand, and simply bombarded Gell’s goal, and so clever was he, that it we? some time before ho was beaten. Porter, who was in Ms element. made tracks from goal. He managed to score, but was foiled within the penalty area just, before he scored, and as the referee had blown his whistle immediately he was tripped, the penalty had to be taken. Gerald 8011, a brother of the two backs opposing him, made no mistake with the kick, putting Institute in the lead, amidst great en thusiaam. Institute 3, South Wellington 1. Institute continued to press. Halley, who was in excellent form, almost adding another goal. His shot clashed into goal, struck the cross-bar, and went behind. South Wellington i tried hard to make headway, M.une battling along in splendid style; but McGirr and Co. always gave th&m the rightabout. Smith and Porter combined well, making an effective and troublesome wing, the latter scoring; but off-side robbed his aide of the goal. Houston, who had been very tricky and untiring in his efforts, gave McArthur a chance, which he accepted, well havno chance with his hoaxier. Institute 5, South Wellington 1. „ - . ' Mr Lithgow very ably controlled the game. MAE IST v. SWIFTS. A hCtlt-contested GAME. Swifts won the toss and elected to play with the wind and sun behind them. MoElligott kicked off, play being confined to Swifts territory for the first ten minutes, but Silencer (Swifts) was in great form in goal. Time uni again.lm came to the rescue of his side, saving shots that would have beaten many ■ goalkeepers. The Marist half-backs allowed tho Swifts forwards no liberties, with the result that tho latter wore seldom dangerous. Eventually Pope, full-back for Swifts, let Kellaway away, the latter’s centre being cleared by CAsey. McElligott secured possession, and passed to Spencer (Marist wing), who sent in a lovely centre, tho ball travelling across the goal mouth. Fitzgerald the Marist custodian, rushed out of his goal and relieved tho dangerous situation ' by kicking the ball to the line. Marist, who were just settling down to each others ploy, made the pace warm for Swifts, but Pope and Guise played very solidly. Marist forwards, led by McElligott, made a determined rush without avail.
The second spell opened with Marist pressing, but the .Swifts goalkeeper was too clover. Bognmla was ’.ext prominent. He beat three opponents and it. wns intercepted by O’Connell sent op to AV- Thomas, who transferred to MrElligott. tho In Iter’s shot; going over the goal posts. Bpepcar, taking the behind kirk. sent, tho hall over the touch lino, where, from th« throw-in, W. Thomas
