The Returned Soldiers’ Ball held itt the Christchurch Art Gallery on Friday night was a big success, the gallery being crowded. The arrangements had been very carefully made, and so everything went with a swing. The committee were: Mrs F. A’Court, Misses L. Gunn, E. A’Court, Messrs Noel Jones, S. C. Kincaid, and C. It. W'illiamson. Mesdames Dalgety, G. E. Rhodes, and Bean . were chaperons. The hall was beautifully decorated with bunting and- Chinese lanterns and umbrellas, and Miss Macdonald’s orchestra supplied the music. The dance was one of the most successful held in the Art Gallery, and should add considerably to the funds of the Returned Soldier*’ Building Fund.
An echo of the war is distinguishable in some of the newest Paris frocks, whether for day or evening wear, which show apron-like effects —not to he confounded with the vogue of the tunic. The aprons are Jong or short, patterned or plain, beaded at the edges or not, and worn with a sash, or with bibs or braces—or not, again according to taste. Satin or chiffon velvet frocks have anrons of chenille. A particularly pretty dance frock seen the other day, made of cream satin, had one of pink glistening jet. An almond-green chiffon frock had an apron of almond blossoms. With dance frocks there is a certain vogue for little double aprons, one shorter than the other, of tulle, set aslant, and edged with leaves or tmv ilowers.
