It is authoritatively estimated thatthe material damage done in tho French devastated area is as follows: Agricultural depreciation, £800,000,000; damaged and destroyed buildings, £850,000,000; loss of furniture, £-100,000,000. Many villages cannot be rebuilt owing to tho changes in the subsoil, and tho presence of explosives and soldiers’ bodies.

Fifty thousand acres of arable land will never again be tillable. The depreciation due to trench-making is estimated at £53,000,000; and tho depreciation in tho back areas duo 'to overgrowth of weeds and grass at £30,000,000.
