SHIPPING FOR N.Z.

POSITION ENTIRELY SATISFACTORY EMBARRASSING STRIKES AND LABOUR TROUBLES. By Telejiaph—Press Association— I Copyright (Official.) (Received June 1, 5,5 p.m.) LONDON, May 30_. The shipping position respecting New Zealand’s needs is still fairly satisfactory, having regard to all the circumstances. Mr (Massey, while in London during the past eight days, saw the Controller with a view to making certain that everything possible was being done to get the the Dominion’s requirements. Ho ascertained that there are at least nine insulated ships set down for July sailing from New Zealand ports, with a chance of more, hut the delay difficulty owing to strikes and labour trouble have not yet been overcome, though the position is somewhat improved. There has been much congestion in the repair shipping yards. As many as 900 ships were awaiting repair a short time ago in Britain, and, in addition, there were >n two porta no fewer than 180 ships idle for want of labour, which may seem an extraordinary fact, in view of the serious unemployment in Britain. Shipbuilding is proceeding satisfactorily in several yards. MR MASSEY ON SHIPPING developments. Speaking at a complimentary luncheon, Mr Massey, as a guest of the Empire Producers, urged the necessity for the development of the shipping services between the overseas Dominion a and Britain. Something had alroadv been dona, but more must bo done to explore the possibilities of the movement towards increasing inter-Empire trade. It might be necessary to subsidise suitable ships, but whatever happened, it was in the interests of the citizens throughout the Empire that everything possible should bo done to improve our shipping facilities. NEW ZEALAND MINISTERS RETURN TO PARIS. Both the New Zealand Ministers returned to Paris on Thursday night in order to attend a plenary session at, which the Austrian treaty is to be considered. and also the presentation of terms to Austria on Monday.
