Captain Eidswag, of the barquentine Alta, from Melbourne, reports a South Sea mystery. Ho discovered unknown castaways on Flint Island, in the Polynesian Group, where ho was blown by storms. Ho made a futile attempt at rescue, trying to reach the marooned people in the lifeboat, which capsized in swift tide* among the treacherous reefs. He was forced to sail away. Two days later the attention of the Altn's crew was attracted by fires on the island, on which several persons wore discernible. Flint 'lsland is far out of trade routes.
