ON INCREASE,

1 .Tie City Council haa authorised payment of the levy,of the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board for the year 1919-20, amounting to £28,242. The rote was not passed without demur, Councillors Wright and McKenzio drawing attention to the ever-increasing co3t of the hospital. Councillor Glover, as a member of the Hospital Board, urged that ii was only natural , J the expenditure should increase if there was to be an up-to-date institution. His idea, however, was thr\ .hospital expenditure should be paid r. _. ?f tbe Government conBoliaated rV ;nue.

"You thick- the hospitals should bo nationalised?" remarked the Mayor. Councillor Norwood suggested that all hospital accounts should be made up in the same way, and that some measure of responsibility should bo cast upon board members for the expenditure indulged in. The view that the' hospitals were getting beyond the control of local bodies, and should be looked after by the Gorernrnent, found an advocate in Councillor Fraser, M.P. The-idea was opposed by the Mayor.
