OVERCROWDED CARS
COUNCIL IX A DIFFICULTY,
The queston of the overcrowding of tramcars came before the City Council Jast night. At the present time, he pointed out, the public were left in ignorance of what exactly was .required. In the case of a rear-end collision with crowded cars the result might be disastrous. The time had certainly arrived' -when ..there should be ah increase A primary thought;was that there should be no standing on the platforms. Of la,te the practice had been to allow" four passengers on a platform, and this threw an undesirable onus on' the conductors. A deputation from the Tramways Union subsequently had an interview with the council, and the point was emphasised that overcrowding led to shortage%in fares, which the conductors hadsto mike.;good. " : ' The'Mayoi, replying to the depu tation, stated that it was impossible to get further tramway equipment at present, and the assistance of the public must be asked in the meantime *to meet the difficulty. The subject would be remitted to the tramways committee for consideration.
