MILITARY DEFAULTERS’ LIST

WHY SOME NAMES WERE OMITTED. Press Association. , CHRISTCHURCH. May 27. Sir James Allen, who is detained in Christchurch owing to tho interruption of tho ferry service, in reply to a question as to why the names of several military defaulters of some notoriety had been omitted from the list of those deprived of civil fights, said that some names had been deliberately left olt on tho advice of the Commission set up to deal with the question of religious objectors. Altogether about 150 names of defaulters had been left oil for thas reason. “The list looks pretty large,” said Sir James, “but the difficulty (has been, to find out where these men are. Some of them may have gone ito tho front under assumed names. One such case recently came under my notice. ’ Others may be out of tho Dominion. If any member of the public knows of any defaulters whose names are not in the list, they ihould acquaint the Defence Department. as far as I know all known defaulters other than religious objectors are on the list."
