Yesterday R. T. Bailey, Inspector of Awards, proceeded against Q. H. Tiller, licensee of the Brunswick Hotel, in the Magistrate’s Court on a charge of having employed a barman at a loa scr wago than that provided in the award. Tho inspector said that the defendant employed a civil servant named F. Oarthy to assist in the bar of his hotel on Saturday afternoons. It was admitted by tho defendant that Oarthy was employed in the bar at the rush hours between 6*nnd 6 o’clock, and did not receive wages. The practice strucii at the fundamental principles of tho award and might open tho door, if allowed, to much abuse, Mr Bailey stated. The casual rat© of wage was ■£"! per day even if a man worked only for an hour. Harry O’Malley, general secretary of the Hotel-workers’ Union, said he interviewed Carthy, who said he was working at the hotel during his own time. Witness told hm thai ho would have to..join the union, and he refused. Carthy said he was a personal friend of the licensee, whom ho rind known for several years. The work he did in tho bar was voluntary. Tho defendant, said he looked upon Carthy as a brother and he had never paid him for nnv services that he had voluntarily rendered. Mr ‘F. V. Frazer, S.M.; said h® thought there was some secret underground arrangement* "between Til-" ler ana Carthy which had not been disclosed, and the court could not accept the plea that he worked for nothing. Tho, case was an unusual one. and the court 1 did not think that Carthy kn. <v ho was breaking a condition of tho award. In the circumstances the defendant would be fined £3, with 30s costs.
