CONCLUDING DAY. POLTHOGUE WINS GRANDSTAND STEEPLES. (From Our Special Reporter.) * WANGANUI, May 24. The Wanganui Jockey Club brought its winter meeting to a close in good weather. The course was in excellent condition.' and the racing was good. The totalisator handled £44,107 for the day, as against £37,104 for the second day last year, making the total for the meeting £83,936 as against .£72,337 for the meeting last year. Results;— WINTER OATS, Of 300 sovs; sis furlongs. 9—W. Raleigh's blk m Rawakore, by Penury—Madam Soult, oyru, 7.4 (M. McOarten) .; 1 I—A.l—A. Alexander's Silver Link, 9.12 (H. Gray) 2 B—P. Johnston's Movement, 7.1 (J. Hockly) 3 Also started—3 Demos 9, 6 Inah 7.12, 5 Tirana 7.7, 4 Royal Chef 7, 3 Carmol Arch 6.13. 7 Oratress 6.9. Silver Link jumped off first followed by Demos. At the four furlongs Inah had charge from Demos and Silver Link. Those were displaced by Rawakore when entered the straight and the mare went on to win comfortably by tvfe lengths. Wemmick's b g Polthoguo, by Patxonus—Sylvia Park mare, oyrs, 9.12 (Copestake) 1 I—Master Strowan, 12.10 (Lorrigan) 2 4r-H. Knight's Bore, 10.3 (F. Ellis) 3 Also started—2 Coalition 11.3, 5 Arlington .10.10, B.Merry Jack 9.7, 9 Styrax 9.7, 7 Grafton Tot 9.7, 6 Gaek-war-9.7.- Si,.-, Grafton Tot made the pace at the start. Passing the stand he had Polthogue and Bore close up with him. At the back of the course Polthogue took the 'Jead from Arlington, Bore, end Grafton Tot. The latter fell, leaving Polthogue in the lead at the four furlongs by five lengths. In the straight Polthogue had to jump the last fence to win, which he did, getting home by four lengths. Coalition and Arlington both fell. Time, smin 4sec. RATA HURDLES, Of 160 sovs;. one mile and five furlongs. 3r—H. MoManaway's blk g Rio, by Signor—Spring, 6yrß, 9.3 (Ayre) 1 1-tJ. Gang Awa was first out with Mode next. Approaching the straight Bermce was out, but he fell, leaving Rio to go on and win by three lengths. Knight's' b g Euripos, by Hymettus Martyrium, 6yrs, 11.9 (McSweeney) 1 2—W. Rayner's Zola, 10.9 (Copestake) 3 &-J. Bull's Yankee Jack. 9.5 (A. McDonalds 3 Also started— i Whiro 10.9, 5 Otter Whiro was the leader as the field passed the straight, Zola being next and then Euripos. Once in the direct running for home Euripos had the race well in hand, and he had no difficulty in accounting for Zola by three lengths. Yankee Jack was a similar distance away third. Time, 3min 14sec. EMPIRE HANDICAP, Of 325 sovs; one mile and a distance. B—Clout Bros.' b g Hushman, by Husbandman—Generosity, 6yrs, 6.9 (McCormack) • 1 4—F. Selwood's Volo, 9.1 (C. Price) 2 B—W.; Duncan's Arrowfield, 6.10 (Barry) 8 Also started—l Rewi Poto 9.5, 6 Tressida 7.5, 5 Tiranga 7.1, 7 Trombone 6.7, 2 Risingham 6.13. Kisingbam jumped away at the start followed by Hushman and Trombone. At'. the back of the course Risingham had th© lead from Hushman and Arrowfield. A good finish resulted in Hushman winning by a neck from Volo, who came at the end with a great rattle. Arrowfield was a length away and then Risingham and Rewi Poto. Time, lmin 57 2-osec. FAREWELL HANDICAP, Of 175 sovs; siX" furlongs. I—Palmer's Astinome, 8.13 (R. Reed) ■ 1 4—Frederic's Seasprite, B.6(A.McDonncll) ".: 2 s—Bull's Ruddy, 8.2 3 Also started—Post Haste 9.3, 2 Flying Gowrie 8.7, Silver Tongue 8, 3 Endure 7.11, 8 Amberino. Astinome was first out and led from Ruddy, Post Haste and Endure into the straight. Scasprito, came through and challenged at the distance, but Astinome went on to win by a length. Ruddy was two lengths away third. Time, lmin 16 4-osoc.
