TO CONSERVE WHITE PINE
THREE-PLY BUTTER-BOXES
RECOMMENDED
: Mr J. H. Robson, sawmillcr, Stratford, produced before the Industries Committee yesterday a cylindrical but-ter-box, made of three-play white pine, consuming Ift 9in of timber, 'and capable of containing 501 bof butter. He claimed that the package was 25 per cent, stronger than tho ordinary package, because of its construction, and that it could he made at half tho present price, while it would save 600 per cent, of the white pine now usable, and enable a great deal of small, non-mill-ablo timber to be used. By perforating the three-ply and stamping it out, the package could bo used as a cheese crate. The packages could be made at Is each, as., against 2s for the present butter-boxes, and 3s for cheese crates, from the smallest nullable ipg they lyould get 22-1 feet of boards, as against 56 if the timber were milled; and they could use 9in, 6in, and other timber ‘much too small for milling. Tho timber was seasoned in the making of threeply, but tho timber for butter-boxes Look eight or nine months to season. The packages could bo packed flat to be returned empty, and used again and again. Packages could be made of two-ply, instead of three-ply, for fruit, »ind a bushel package could be made 'for Is. Ho wanted tho Committee to bring it under the notice of the Dairy Division and before the dairy companies. . , Sixty million foot of white pine had been sent to Australia last year, and this could bo sent in three-ply, thus greatly conserving the timber.
