SOLDIER DISAPPEARS
EVIDENCE CONCLUDED.
Yesterday the evidence of the last Wif. ness was" Taken By .the" Military Court of Inquiry, set up to investigate the circumstances relating to the disappearance of Rifleman John Russell from the ferry steamer Mararoa. ■ A cousin of Rifleman Russell. John Hutchison, was recalled and examined by the court. ■ - r “I am perfectly satisfied. said Mr Hutchison, "that in mv interview .with Captain Levy, on October 22nd, when I was accompanied by Mr Hobbs. I mono it quite clear that X considered Bussell* was amenta lone, and I emphasised the mental state of the man at the time/" When it was arranged that an escort was to go with Bussell to Hanmer. witness did not know whether it would oo one man or more, and was never consulted in the matter. Concerning Bussell's mental state, witness considered he was exceedingly cunning, which was borne out by tho way Russell eluded those who were, searchin gfor him. The court reserved its finding.
