The Meritorious Service Medal na been awarded to Staff Sergeant-Major (Warrant Oihcer) Albert Austin, New Zealand Permanent Military Staff (now lieutenant. Now Zealand Army Ui'duauce Department).
Dr W. J. H. Hislop has taken up the duties of acting-superintendent at tho v* eiimgtou Hospital, in place of Dr Barclay. Dr \f oodhouse, the newlyappoiiued superintendent, is expected to arrive in .Now Zealand shortly.
Mr J. H. Carrad has; been appointed deputy registrar of the Suprerne Court at Nelson, as from April 29th ;■ also clerk of tho Warden’s Court, receiver of gold revenues and mining registrar at Nelson and Glenbope for the Karamea mining district.
A well-known resident of Feilding, Mr George Spence, died on Mommy after a lengthy illness. _ The late Mr Spence, who was hity-eight years of age, came to New Zealand in 1880, and for the r.ast twenty-fivo years has been ongaged in business in Feilding.
The death occurred at Taratahi on Tuesday, after a long and severe illness, of Mr M illiam Welsh, one of tho best-known judges of Romney and Lincoln sheep in the Dominion. The deceased, who was sixty-six years of age, was a antive of Sotland, and came to New Zealand forty years ago.
The death occurred at Hokitika of Mr Edward O’Connor, the proprietor of the Southland Hotel. Deceased, who was seventy-four years of age, landed on the Coast in 1866, and in 1879 commenced hotel-keeping. About five years later he bought the’ Southland Hotel, and these premises he conduct until his death.
- - This efvening member# of the Academy qlf Fine Arts will meet at jibe Art Gallery, Whitmore street, to welcome the soldier-artist members who have returned from active service. An excellent. programme of music, song, and story has been arranged. The artist members, who have given then service to tho Empire in the great war are Messrs Nugent, Welch, A. F. Nicoll, E. Murray Fuller, Esmond Atkinson, and W. H. Carter, junior.
The splendid war record of Captain p. A. Ardagh, D. 5.0., # M.C.» at one time a resident medical officer at the Auckland Hospital, was the subject of eulogistic remarks at a recent meeting of tho Auckland Hospital Board. The chairman, in referring to the gallant work accomplished by Captain Ardagh. said it was -a matter of astonishment that he had not received the V.C., for which he had been recommended. The board passed a resolution congratulate ing the captain, and it was decided to send him a letter containing the members’ sentiments respecting bis gallant record .
