“LIVING MEMORIALS”

MASTERTON CALEDONIAN SOCIETY LEADS THE WAY.

Visitors to the town-planning exhibition in the . Town Hall have been very much interested with a survey and plan designed and prepared by A. W. Buxton, Ltd., landscape architects, of Christchurch. This shows the scheme intended to bo carried out by tho Wairarapa Caledonian Society to perpetuate the memory of the fallen soldiers of the district. When completed, it will he known as the Wairarapa fallen soldiers’ and Cameron memorial sports ground. A brief description of the plan follows: On entering, an ornamental approach will conduct visitors to a widening avenue, which will lead to the, band rotunda and grandstand, the latter being surrounded with beautiful flowering shrubs. At the sunny end of tho green is to be placed a pergola, with pavilion in the centre, thus forming a shaded pathway, ornamental trees being used as a background. A lovely pergola will lead to a let and tennis lawns adjoining a ng green.' These playing areas will be close together to permit of social' intercourse. Adjoining the greens will he an area reserved for vehicles, encircled by ornamental trees.

The children have not been forgotten, for a sunny corner has been selected for a children's recreation ground. Hero will he situated a sandpit, wading pool, swings, and sheltersheds.

Turning away to the left from the main entrance, visitors will pass down a terrace, and there behold a charm-ingly-desighed water effect, the view omlbracing lakes, islands, rustic bridges, winding paths, and grassy lawns. A corner will be wholly devoted to carefully-selected native trees, shrubs, and plants. Shelter from the prevailing winds will be secured by providing a plantation of suitable hardy ornamental trees. In front of tho grandstand And below the, toyrace will be tho sports grounds, designed for football and cricket, encircling which is to be a cycling and racing track.
