Mr Ballinger, on behalf of the congregation of the mission, presented Mr jiompthorne with a silver communion service and of linen, and wished him God-speed and every success in his new sphere.
The staff of Messrs Bray Bros., of Wellington, met together a few day* ago- to' bid • farewell to Mr und Mrs Frank Picofc, who have been associated with the firm for some years past. On behalf of the firm. Mr Bray presented Mr and Mrs Picot with a set of Satsurria vases and a gold-mounted fountain pen. Mr Picot is about to take sole control of Messrs Picot Bros.
Major J. "Westmacott is the repre« sentative of the N.Z.E.F. on the _Battle Exploit Memorials Committee, which bai been set up as a medium between the various Allied forces and the French and Belgian Governments to facilitate the erection of memorials by individual I units to commemorate exploits on th« field of action. f Major G. R. Mitchell, D. 5.0., the officer commanding the troops on tho Carpentaria, is a Main Body man* who went away tho Otago Mounted Rifles. ' He received the D.S.O. at the last battle of the Sommo, near Pozieros. The Otago Mounted Rifles were then attached to the 12th Division, and wore the only mounted unit in France. Tho mounteds went all through the second battle of the Marne with tho 51st Divi- «
sion (Highlanders)!, and between Reims and Chateau Thierry.
By the death of Mr Jamas' Frazer, who passed away this week at Wangariui Ji'ast, *tho Dominion loses one of its oldest settlers. D.eceased, who was born in Scotland, was one year old when he landed xn Now Zealand, and at the time of his death ho was a colonist of seventy years' standing. He lived in the ivaibaagata district some forty-five' years, then want to Colyton, where ho engaged in farming for seventeen years. On retiring twelve years a&o he took up his resi' dence in . Wanganui East.

Ser-geant-Major Mclntyre joined tho »crvice after his return from the Boot War. Major McCristoll, in making the presentation on behalf of the staff, r& gretted the loss of such a loyal and well-respected member. The presentation took the form of a substantial cheque, a silver tea service, ~a silver-rail oak tray, and a silver"cakest'aaa.
Mr C. J. Harley, of- Nelson,' ha* received word that his eldest son. Howaid, who joined the pCavy during tho war, has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant-commander. Duriac the latter .part of the war.-' fljietite.nantCcmmander Harley was serving on the Tenacious, one of the most modern. type of destroyers, but he is now attached to IT.M.S. Success, which will be completed about July,, and in vhe meantime he is on the rear-admiral's staff at Sunderland. .The Success is one of the. vessels to be presented to Australia, and she is doscribed-as being "the very last word" of her'class in construction and equipment. Lieuten-ant-Commander Harley has volunteered for two years' service, and will brine the Success out to Australia.
Sidney Drew, the popular film comedian, died suddenly from heart trouble in New York on April oth, aged fiftyfour yonrs. Mr Drew was in Now Zealand some twenty years ago with his first wife, Gladys Rankin, daughter of McKee T'.ankin. who visited .New Zealand with Nance O'Xeill. Mrs Drew died in 1914, and their son, who was also a film actor, wax killed in France last May while serving with the French Arinrion Corps. On July 25th, 1914, Mr Drew married Lucille, ' McVey, a concert sinser, with whom he appeared in the Drew film comedies and latterly on the stage. He was a brother of John Drew, the famous actor and unci* of Ethel (Barrymore and her brothers, Lionel and ' John, and was a member of on© of the most distinguished theatrioaJ families on the- English-speaking stage.
