The premises of trie Bristol Piano Company were closed yesterday afternoon in order to enable the staff to celebrate the marriage of Sergeant I'khva.td Theomin, of Dunedin, one of tho company's directors. An adjournment was made to the Midland Hotel, where refreshments and a musical programme were much enjoyed.
Described by the magistrate at Marylcbono Court (London) as "evidently a liar and an impostor," George Samuel Bailer, an African negro "medicine maker," of Elm-mews, Bayswater, was sentenced to two terms "of service badge, a 1914 star ribbon, and six months' hard labour afor wearing a a wound stripe without .authority, and [attempting to obtain money by fraud. Ho was also fined £2O for using the title M.D. without authority. It was stated that Bailey had practised as a "doctor, and had exhibited outside his lodging a board inscribed "Dr. G. S. Bailey, M.D., Specialist in male, female, and children." M e had treated a number of soldiers, and made claims on the War Office in respect of the treatment. To the bench Bailey complained that the "truth is not 'speaking to-day." The proceedings, ho declared, were prompted by "supcrstitiousness" and prejudice, on the part of his brethren because he was a "poor coloured man.'*"" The police said the" prisoner had been employed as a kitchen portor at the Ritz Hotel, but according to a widow with whom lie had boon keeping companv, he had since been practising as a doctor.
