SATURDAY’S Gf.fiSES INSTITUTE OLD BOYS v. PETONE. Bovs’ Institute Old Bors met Petone at Petone, the result being a win for Institute by 2 goals to 1. Prom the opening of the game Institute made things willing, but the Petone backs, especially Bold, were in good form, and repeatedly transferred the ball into tae Institute territory. Houston, of Insitut?, was early noticeable for tricky footwork he nicely beat two opponents and slipped the ball on to Haller, whose parting shot went behind. Petone rallied, and by clever footwork by Camm at inside right, play was transferred to the Tnstitne penalty area, where Gosney sent the dMI hehind. Play continued to be very tost. Porter of Institute, secured possession and passed to Smith at outside right, who beat the left half of Petone. end sent in a raking shot which Porteona fisted out. Institute continued to press, but could not beat Portcous, who was playing a great gams in goal. Eventually Institute secured a corner, which was accurately taken by Halley. Tho ball landed under the crossbar, touched one of the Petone players and went through. Institute 1, Petone 0. Petone nettled by this reverse, set to with a will to equalise matters, and Camm, from 1yards out, sent in a splendid shot, Tarrant bringing off a grand save, a fruitless corner resulting. McGirr, centrehalf for Institute, set his forwards going, and by combined forward play, the ball was soon ■ near the Petone goal. Harris, centre-forward, rushed in to apply the finishing touch, and Porteous grasping the situation rushed out, the players came in contact. Portcous was injured, but fortunately he ivas able to resume. No further score took place during this half. The second half was full of interest, with Institute, as in the first half, in the ascendency. Porteous time and again saved his side, but latterly ho was beaten, but no fault could bo attached to him, as Halley repeated his performance of the first half by placing the ball in ’ the goalmouth from, a corner kick, McGirr smartly heading through. After this second reverse Gosney wont right-back. Bold taking his place at out-side-right, the alteration making for improvement. Success at last crowned the efforts of the Petone players. The cut-side-left. cleverly slipped the ball past Cohen and swung the ball across to the right. Bold came rushing in and catching the ball with bis kneo, s©nt it between the posts, Tarrant having no chance to save. The actual shot was somewhat lucky, but the success was well deserved. Petone now made desperate efforts to equalise, but found the Institute halves a stumbling block, especially McGirr and Crane. No further score, resulted. Institute retiring winners by 2 goals to 1. The best players for Petone were Porteous. Camm. and Bold. The selectors should keep their eye on Porteous, who should come near representative honours. He has one fault, and that is, rushing out to clear, before his hacks are beaten. MARIST v. PORIRUA. At Porirua on Saturday Marist met Porirua on the hospital ground and defeated them by i goals to 1. Hue ground was in perfect oracr, and bo.b teams were evenly matched. From the kick-off Marist invaded Ijorirua goalmouth, but Mungavin and Wallis proved safe. After some up and down play Marshall secured the ball from a melee in front of the goal and opened first score for Marist by placing the ball just inside the net. Marist 1, Porirua 0. Porirua made the pace with strong endeavours to score, but Mn rists backs were equal to the occasion. ■At this period Cashman, who was playing for Marist at right half, received the ball, passed to J. Fitzgerald, who in turn passed it to Carruthers. The last named took the hall down the line, and put in a lovely dropping shot which gave Windley no chance. Marist 2, Porirua 0. Porirua then took a turn at attacking, and Eastwood made some good runs on the wing. He centred the ball neatly each time but the centre men were unable to make anything of . the opportunities. Eventually Rene (Porirua} received the ball, and after dribbling down well, shot a good goal, making the score Marist 2, Porirua 1. at half time. In the second spell it was easily seen that both teams were striving their utmost for a win. The forwards combined well, and the heading was a treat to watch, Thomas (Marist) and Bene and Thompson (Porirua) being very prominent. Up and down play ensued, and shooting was the order of the game, Hayes and Windley, respective goalies, bringing off some tine saves. From, a goal k ; ck, I/O we and Mooney brought the ball well down the field, and the former passing at the right time gave Mooney a good opportunity, and he made no mistake, thus registering Harists third goal. This reverse roused Porirua, and Mears, Whitehouse and Eastwood put in sortie good work, but could not score. Plav was oven for a while until Casey, beating Eiastwood for the ball, kicked well into goal, where Mungavin cleared but the ball struck a Porirua player and J. Fitzgerald being handy shot hard, hut Windley again cleared in groat style. Hero Carruthers received the ball and centred well into goal, and Windley in endeavouring to clear, collided with a Porirua back, and Mooney rushing up secured an easy goal, making the score Marist i, Porirua 1. When the whistle blew for time both teams were playing at their best, but no further score resulted. E. and M. Fitzgerald played a prominent game at back for Marist. Mr E. Windley was the referee.
THIRD GRADE. Empire met Swifts at lulhirnic ,Parle, and defeated them by six goals to nil. Playing at Petoiie, Y.M.C.A. defeated the local team by two goals to nil. FOURTH GRADE. At Petone South AVellington plnved a drawn game with St. David's. C. Brown shot a goal for South Wellington, and r'indlav for St. David's. At Porirna Thorndon met the suburban team (Porirna) on the new grounds near the railway station, the hospital grounds being occupied l, . by the senior teams. The game was fast and interesting from start to finish, the town team defeating Porirna by 2 goals to 1. For the winners 11. Nickless and Won nocott shared the goals, and Pririe scored "junior Marist lost to .Tohnsonville. 2—o. FOURTH GRADE. , Marist defeated Y.M.C.A. by 6 to 0. Ryan (21, Beveridge, Tailored, Lewis, r t nd Pope scored for the winners. FIFTH A GRADE. Marist defeated Institute by 5 to 3. FIFTH B GRADE. Marist defeated Seatoun by 8 to 0. SIXTH A GRADE. Marist (N) defeated Institute (A) by 7 to 0. SIXTH B GRADE. Marist (T.) drew with St. Thomas. Marist (M.) drew with Wadestown. SIXTH C GRADE. Marist (T.) won by default from Scaloun. Marist C (N.) defeated Marist D (N.) -by 5 to o.'
