THE DROUGHT BREAKS
HEAVY RAIN IN AUCKLAND DISTRICT.

AUCKLAND, May 18.
The drought has broken. The weather has been threatening for several days, and a heavy north-easterly gale blew .for about three hours before daylight this morning, accompanied by a thunderstorm. and heavy rain. The fall to 9 a.m. was 2.32 inches. The weather moderated to-day, but remains threatening. Tho barometer has fallen by .70 degrees since Thursday, and is now 29.70, the lowest for several weeks. The last fall, of over an inch, was on October 24th, the highest since being .86 inch, recorded at 9 a.m. on March 15th. The total this year is now eight inches. WHANG AMU, May 17.
The protracted spell of drought in the Whangarei district has now effectually broken by useful warm rain, which set in last night and continues. Coun. try reports indicate that tho zone is not yet very extensive, but prospects of general influence are good.
