An unidentified schooner arrived in the stream at Wellington at 6.50 o clock last evening. The Hawera, bound from Wellington to Patea, nut back to port early on Saturday morning owing .to a mishap to her engines. , ~ Mr Robert Wilson, the lighthousekecper at Castlepoint, has received notice that he has been transferred to Portland Island. - - . ~ , , . The ICarorl, which left Auckland last week for Sydney, will afterwards go to Newcastle to load coal for Auckland, instead of Dunedin, as previously arranged. Mr W. Allan has, joined the Atua as fourth engineer in. place of Mr D. DimThe Hinemoa is to leave Wellington about 3 o'clock to-morrow' morning for qome of the Cook Strait lights. The Kia Ora left Wellington at 7 a.m. yesterday for Dunedin and Dyttelton to complete discharge. The coastal steamer Tainui left Lyttelton on Friday night for Wanganui with' a cargo of mixed merchandise. Captain E. A. Stein will relieve Mr J. A. Hughan ns chief officer on the Karorl, as the latter is going on holiday. The Stella is due at Wellington today from Dunedin on her way to Auckland to load scrap iron for Deuedin. Mr Rutherford, chief engineer of the Waipori, has resigned his position with the Union Company in order to take up a shore appointment. ■ Mr T. Melville, late chief engineer of the Whangape, has joined the Waipori as chief engineer on expiry of holiday leave ashore. , Advice has been received that the Waltomo is due to leave Singapore on May 18th for New Zealand main ports, en route from Calcutta. Mr D. Harkness, late chief officer of the, Navua, who has been ashore on holiday leave, hap joined the Monowai as chief officer, relieving Mr F. Govsky, who has come ashore on holiday leave.
According to English shipping papers -to hand, the American schooner Janet Carruthers, which visited Melbourne lest year to pick up a -wheat cargo for tho States, has gone ashore near Gray’s Harbour. TT.S.A.
The Paloona, according to advice received by the Union Company, left Rarotonga on May 10th for Papeete and San Francisco in continuation of her voyage from Wellington. The Union Co.'s cargo! steamer Katoa left Melbourne at i .p.m. on Thursday with, a cargo of wheat for discharge at Dunedin and Timaru. The vessel is due at Dunedin on Thursday morning next. Wright, Stephenson and Co. advise that the Kennedy, which arrived at Wellington yesterday morning from Picton, is to sail to-day for Nelson and West Coast. The Waimea, due to-morrow morning from Tarakohe, is to sail in the evening direct for Westport and Greymouth. The Kara,, which left .Wellington on Saturday evening for Lyttelton, is to return to Wellington this week, and v ill proceed hence to New Plymouth. Tho Port Sydney, now completing her cargo at Wellington, is to sail on Thursday for London via Panama. The auxiliary schooner Huia arrived at Wellington on Saturday morning from Melbourne via Auckland with part cargo of explosives to put out at Shelly Hay. The Paeroa, after transhipping explosives from the Huia, will sail to-night for Nelson, Westport, and Greymouth. The Huia will proceed on to Lyttelton and Dunedin with remainder’of cargo of explosives.
The Middleham Castle, which left Wellington early yesterday morning for Napier to load for London, is duo back at Wellington from the former port in about ten days’ time to complete her cargo.

During tho month of November, 1918, 185 vessels passed through the Panama Canal. Of these 81 wore American, 88 British; 16 Danish. 18 Trench, and 12 Norwegian. Tho cargo passed through the canal during tho month amounted to 638.848 tons. During the period 416.000 cubic yards of earth were dredged, classified at 261.300 maintenance, 19,500 construction, 156,600 auxiliary.

The vessel is duo here towards Urn end of Juno WATER LILY SOLD. Mr R- Miller, of Miller Bros.. engineers. Port Chalmers and Lyttelton, telegraphed to a “New Zealand Times" representative on Saturday that ho has sold their ketch Water Lily to Mr George Cross, of Invercargill, for the timber trade between Stewart Island and Invercargill. The Water Lily was bought by Miller Bros, for use in salvaging the wreck of the Waikare in Dusky Sound, in w r hich service she performed satisfactory work a few months ago. CARPENTARIA. AT LYTTELTON. The liner Carpentaria arrived at Lyttelton yesterday morning from Plymouth via -Panama, m ballast, with troops. The vessel loads meat at Lyttelton under the auspices o,f the New. Zealand Shipping Company, for Loudon. WESTMORELAND TO LOAD. Good work is being done with the loading, of the Westmoreland’s cargo at Bluff, there having been .no stoppages through bad weather. She will probably leave Bluff to-day for Wellington, whore she is due on Wednesday to complete her loading for Liverpool. "ALL WELL" ON MAKURA. . A wireless message was received by the Union Company from the captain of the K.M.S. Makura stating that the vessel would* arrive at Suva: yesterday morning from Auckland. The , message also states that all on board are well. PALOONA T.FIFT PAPEETE. The E.M.S. Paloona en route from Wellington to San Francisco, continued her voyage from Papeete on Wednesday last. ARAWA FROM LONDON. The Shaw. Savill and Albion liner Arawa arrived at on Saturday morning from London via Panama and Lyttelton, and berthed at No. 4, Gueen’s wharf, to disembark troops and passenger*. . ~ , . The vessel left London on April Ist, and had fine weather till arrival on April IBth at Cristobal, where bunker coal was loaded. The canal was negotiated without dolor and Balbao -was cleared on April l&th. A pleasant run across the Pacific was experienced and the Arawa reached Lytelton on last -Wednesday. The South Island troops wore disembarked, and the Arawa left Lyttelton on Friday for Wellington. The Arawa left Wellington at? 3.23 p.m. on Saturday for Auckland; where sho will commence discharge. She will subsequently return to Wellington to put out part cargo and will afterwards go to Lyttelton and Port Chalmers with the remainder. The Arawa will load at Port Chalmers, Lyttelton, and Wellington, and will sail from Wellington on June 20th for London via Panama. j Captain H. Advice received by the New Zealand Shipping Company states that the Paparoa, en route from Glasgow with troops, passed Pitcairn Island on May 11th. The vessel is due at Wellington about May 24th. THE CONVERTED DREDGE. Work in coneotion with converting the ex-Oamaru dredge ... Progress into a steamer at Port Chalmers has been delayed somewhat owing to the workmen being required elsewhere. It is expected, however, that the masts will be ready for stepping in about a week's time. Tho Progress should be ready for sea about the middle of next month, when sho will commence taking in cargo. "ALT. WELL" ON MOERAKI. Wireless advice was received by the Union Company from the master of the Moeraki. ’ which is bound from Sydney to Suva with'a large number of Australian passengers for transhipment to the Makura for.
