COMMERCE AND MINING

STOCK EXCHANGE QUOTATIONS.

Press Association.

CHRISTCHURCH. May 16. Stock Exchange sales reported:— Union. Shipping (5$ per cent. cum. prei.). 21s 3d. Wellington Frozen Meat (£2 12s 6d paid), dJSWa 64- EUNEDIN> May J 6. Sales on ’Change; Hnddart-Parker (ord.), 40s 3d. New Zealand Paper Mills, 28s. Sales reported: — Dominion Rubber, 31s 6d. CANTERBURY GRAIN MARKETS. Press Association. CHRiSTCri U RCH, May 16. Tbe grain markets ax® very quiet, there being no inquiry on the part of millers for wheat and offerings have eased off now that it is realised that millers are slocked up pretty well for the ’time being. Oats are difficult to procure from growers, who are firm holders for better prices than are at present offered. Speculative business Still goes on, but uutil merchants really come on the market for supplies tho speculation does not ’iilfect the growers, who have their own ideas of values with the winter before them and the shortage of feed for stock. Oatsheaf chaff is firmer and although it is now quoted at -£5 10s to 415 15s at country stations it is difficult to procure. Some cutting is being done, but growers are not anxious to sell. In grass qeed and clovers there is little doing, but the linseed market is firm as a result of inquiries from Sydney, though no further advance is quoted. Peas are meeting with good inquiry. Partridges selling at 5s ait country stations. The •potato market is firmer. 4!5 10s now being paid at country stations for white varieties for this month’s delivery, and Dakato Reds are realising 5s per ton more for June delivery, 4J5 16s has been paid. Thsro are inquiries coming to hand from Wellington for potatoes, though it is stated that there are largo quantities in store on the wharf at Wellington. One reason given is that the Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu and Wellington crons have turned out better than was expected. Christchurch merchants have been insisting on shipping potatoes to the port mentioned ond refusing to find slipping space to any other destination and this, it is said, will probably account for some of the congestion at Wellinggtoi,. Oniono are firmer and are quoted at .£6 15s to JS7 at country stations, deliveries having eased off.
