The Union Company’s coal hulk No. 6, which sank off Shoal Bay, Auckland, on April 21st with over 500 tons of coal on board, is still in the same position as when she .sank. The only' work done toward raising her is that four chains have been placed under the keel and brought to the surface in readiness for lifting her. It is understood that further salvage work will bo carried out when the busy shipping conditions have been relieved and labour is available. Mr W. A. Cairns joined the Maori as third engineer yesterday. The coastal steamer Paeroa arrived at Wellington, yesterday from Hokitika via Westport with about 20 tons of general cargo. The vessel will await the arrival of the auxiliary schooner Huia, from Melbourne via Auckland, to load explosives from the sailer for Nelson, Westport, and Greymouth. Mr F. Govsky, chief officer of the Monowai, signed off the vessel's articles at Wellington yesterday
Mr G. M. Rennie has succeeded Mr A. G. Kyle as chief engineer of the Rosamond. Thq Kgmo is expected to leave Wellington on Tuesday for Lyttelton with remainder of cargo of timber from Grevmouth. The American four-masted barquentine Hawaii arrived at Melbourne on May Ist with a general cargo from Sun Francisco, consigned to the Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd. The Kokiri is to sail from Greymouth on Monday with a cargo of coal and timber for Wollingtn. According to Sydney files the Dutch Royal Packet steamer Rogganeen, which is due at Auckland from Java on May 23rd, is to call at Australia en route. She was to leave Balik Pappan on May 3rd, and is due at Sydney to-day. The Remuera is to iret away from Wellington at noon to-day for Lyttelton. The New Zealand Shipping Co. advises that the Middleham Castle is to leave Wellington to-morrow morning for Napier for Homeward loading. NEW SHAW. SAVILL LINER. . fhe Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's new steamer Otlra is to load at New York this month for Australia and Now Zealand. The Gtira, a standard steamer purchased while on the stocks, is of the two-deck, with shelter deck poop type, ouilt by Messrs Harland and Wolff, and !3 one of their "G" class steamers. She is 650 ft long, 58ft wide, and 40ft deep, is *OO tons gross,' 16,000 tons displacement. »nd 10,800 tons dead weight, with a speed of 13 knots. - COMING FROM HOME. The Shaw. PORT SYDNEY IN PORT. The C. and D. liner Port Sydney arrived at Wellington at 2.30 p.m. yesterday from Timaru, and berthed at the Glasgow wharf to complete Homeward loading. The vessel is to sail from here next Friday for London via Panama, taking a limited number of saloon, pasMongers. Z HXNEMOA'S movements. The Government steamer Hinemoa, which was brought off the patent . slip yesterday morning, is to sail early on Tuesday morning fur some of the Cook Strait lighthouses. She will visit the Brothers. Jackson Head, Port Underwood. Tory Channel, and French Pass. The vessel is due back here a week later,. and ( will subsequently make bar round trip to the northern lighthouses. THE FOXTON TRADE.”* According to the “Manawatu Herald" the Foxton Chamber of Commerce is caking steps to ascertain whether a steamer can be placed In the Foxton trade to replace the Queen of the South. Until this Is done it is probable that the Queen Shipping'Company will endeavour to get a steamer to make periodical calls at Foxton. The Blenheim left Wellington last evening on a trip to Foxton for Levin and Co. The vessel will not make another visit to Foxton again until the next spring tides. TODAY'S BERTHAGE. The auxiliary schooner Houto arrived at - Wellington at 10.80 a.m. yesterday with 150 tons of general cargo from Dunedin. The load Included 50 tons of beer. The Houto loft Dunedin at 5 p.m. last Saturday, and had fine weather until off Kaikoura on Tuesday afternoon. A light northerly was then- experienced until Die vessel was off Cape Palliser on Wednesday night. A moderate gale from the north-west, which backed to the west-north-west, was encountered. The Houto was hove- to from Wednesday night till Thursday afternoon, and was blown back to Kaikoura.- She carried away her towe, topsail and split her fore and aft fore-sail at the foot. The vessel then came up to port, using both her engines. The Houto, after discharge, will load cargo here for Nelson, and is to get away for that port on Monday. At Nelson she will load scrap iron for Dunedin. While at Dunedin recently the Houto had higher coamings put around her hatches. Captain Richards has Mr W. Brown as mate. Mr E. Q, F. Zohrab is the local agent. ATUA FOR SYDNEY. Tho Union Company's*Bteamer Auta is how fixed to sail from Wellington at roon to-day direct for Sydney. The vessel is taking passengers and cargo. KAIKOURA FOR LONDON, The New Zealand Shipping Co. advises that the Kaikoura’s departure from Wellington for London via Panama has been postponed till noon on Monday. THE WRECKED ALERT. BARQUE FROM TIMARU. Full particulars of the wreck of tho American barque Albert on the coast of California recently came to hand by the last mall. Losing her course in a dense fog the Albert was dashed to pieces on a submerged reef eight milee north of the Point Reyes lighthouse and a mile and a half from the shore. Captain H. 0. Uhlberg, 77 years of ago,- master of the
vessel was drowned. The 11 men of the crew reached shore, exhausted, after fighting in the fog for seven hours to bring the bits of floating wreckage to which they clung to land. The vessel, which was valued at 4112,000, and her cargo of leather an dtallow, valued at 4120,000, are a total loss. The Albert was a three-masted barque of 634 tons'net register. She was ending a voyage from Timaru, having sailed from there on January 25th. The vessel lost her way in the fog, and shortly after midnight drifted into Bodega Bay, 12 miles north of Point Reyes. She put to sea again, tho master hoping to find tho course. But as the tog thickened it was decided to drop anchor, which would rot hold. For many years the Albert was In the sugar trade between San Francisco and Honolulu. Later she plied to and from Alaska. She left San Francisco on ler last voyage to New Zealand last October. The barque, which was owned by Messrs Olsen Bros., of San Francisco, was built in 1890 at Port Blakeley, Washington. FIRE ON A LIGHTER. A lighter alongside the Arahura in the Gisborne roadstead caught fire a few days ago. A tug went out and brought the craft alongside the wharf where the outbreak was extinguished _ by the fire brigade assisted by waterside workers. The fire was caused through water coming in contact with some lime. The lighter was not greatly damaged. A quantity of household furniture, including two sewing machines, was considerably damaged, while a consignment of gin escaped with a profuse covering of lime over the cases. The household furniture was similarly affected. Most of it belonged to a young couple w-ho were coming to Gisborne to take up their residence. There was no cover of insurance on their possessions. • CARGO ,FOR GREYMOUTH. The Blackball Company's steamer Ngatoro will receive general cargo at the Taranaki street wharf this morning for Greymouth until 11 a.m. The vessel is to sail at noon, and will probably load at Grey for Wellington.
