ANZAC DAY
ATTITUDE OF RETURNED SOLDIERS.
The Wellington Returned Soldiers’ Association decided last evening to take a firm stand with regard to the celebration of Anzac Day. At the meeting of returned soldiers held in the Town Hall concert chamber, the chairman’(Air J. D. Harper) announced that a letter had been received from the AVellington Alaster Drapers’ Association asking for support of the resolution urging that Anzac Day should be held on the Sunday nearest tho actual date.
Air Harper said his opinion was that there should bo Anzac Day and ono Anzac Day only—on April 2oth. (Loud applause.) He moved: —“That Anzac Day be created a statutory holiday and that it bo celebrated on April 25th and no other date.”
This was carried unanimously. Referring earlier in the evening to Anzac Day, General Richardson said he supported the idea that, it should be a sacred day. There was just a possibility that the British Government would decide on a day as a Liberty Day, but nothing of the sort could possibly" take the place of Anzac Day. It was not only a day to commemorate the deeds of those who fell on that day, but to perpetuate the memory of all those New Zealanders who lost their lives in the great war.
