TRAMWAY SYSTEM
NEW CAR ROUTES G EXTENSION F’OUESHADOWED vY THE MAYOR. In his address to the new City Council yesterday, the Mayor said that various new tramway works would have to be nndeilmken. Wellington's tram service, he claimed, was as good as any in New Zealand, but in the hist few years progress hud been retarded. The overcrowding winch prevailed was to be deplored, and mu not a credit to the city. The bou« of work and school hours could be adjusted so that the conge.* ion on the trams would be relieved. The Mayor said that h© would support, the trams being tnuen to Northland and Wilton’s Bush as soon as possible, but if this was done and it cieatod a rise in values, the city should get half of the increased values. He di not see why the council should spend its money and increase values to enrich other people. ~ . The line to- Island Bay snouid be dupl:;cajted, and moiro tramcars should Oe built as soon as possible. A uuiveisal tram faro had -been advocated, but he advised the .advocates to look very carefully into the question. A. nnir rorsal fare would cut out that great source of revenue —the penny fare. Wellington gave various concessions to tram traveller!, and a universal fare would nob be suitable here. Tho new council would have to consider the question of providing another line to Oriental Bay by running trams from the Jervois quay lino along Wakefield street to join the present line to Oriental Bay/ This would relieve the congestion in ' Willis street and the Quay, which was far too great.
