HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING,

The monthly meeting of the Hutt County Council was held yesterday. There were present: Councillors J!\ C. Coorer (chairman), W. Qallaway, W. J. Howell, M. .Welch, J. Whiteinan, and I'. Cavanngh. ; COKRESPC>NDHNCE.

John Hunter and ' others wrote asking for a road at Trentham, now in bad condition, to be formed and metalled.—The necessary "work is to be done. Cromb. Wilton and Keid, wrote with reference to a road from the late Mr Drewitt's property to , the Mangakotukutuku stream and the"Varaparaumu (tame farm. The road was unfenced and needed attention, the water tables needed deepening and cleaning, while the groynes wert in an unsatisfactory condition and needeu immediate attention; ■ the road to Cromb't needed widening and otherwise- attending to.-r-It:was decided that the. ga.te on ; the road be removed, and the ranger be instructed to impound wandering stock. A letter was received from the. Wellington Automobile Club asking for the erection of sign, posts in various parts of the county.—lnstructions were issued to the inspector to have the posts erected. The Palmerston North Chamber .of Commerce,wrote suggesting that the Government take over the control of the main arterial roads.—The letter was toceived.

The MiHon Borough Council, in a circular letter, asked . for support in order to seoure for New Zealand a mercantile fleet.—Received.

The Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board forwarded a letter containing the estimates and; allocation for 1919-20. ;..'.-. INSPECTOR'S REPORT.

The inspector <Mr Cudby) reported that he had inspected the Lowry Bay road and found tW width of the unused portion varying from 28ft to 36ft, but he saw nio •inconvcTiiie'ivco ■ caused tb tar owners. Improvement had been effected to the Hutt road,, and'with other minor matter* attended; to would serve, the purpose for years. Stokes's bridge needed rodecking, but the condition of the structure did not warrant the outlay. He recommended that the bridge be re-erected in : ferro concrete. The Vlirumerton-Pahaiita.mii road hftcl been repaired, and was in good order. Relative to the proposed roads at Plimmerton extension he estimated the cost at- .£650. The Western Hutt road had been metalled, and other matters nttended to in the locality, while timber had been secured for repairs to the two suspension bridges on Akatarawa track, this work having arisen owing to work being done on , the Hutt-YVaikanae road. Timber had also been ordered for various bridges, while roads at. Otaohanga had been attended to. Cattle, however; played havoo with the sand banks. The ordinary maintenance of all roads had been attended to, and, generally speaking, the roads were in very fair order. It was agreed that a new bridge in Stokes's Valley was necessary, while the estimated cost of roads at Plimmerton extension was considered on the low side. It was decided that the necessary setps be..taken to rebuild the bridge.' the arrangements to be left in the hands of the chairman and Councillor Welch'. Tho report wa« adopted. The sub-inspector reported that.settlers in some localities were taking metal off the road without permission, and suggested charging 6d per load.—lt "was resolved to make further inquiries into the matter, and to fence a portion of Wallacevllle hill road to prevent persons taking metal. The .roport was adapted. ■ The iransrer reported that during the month "he had impounded sixteen head of stock.

The motor lorry driver reported cnrt*p 23S yards of metal during the month. Both reports were adopted. A deputation consisting of Messrs Hark, Russell and Ball, comploininjr of the drainini? of Wai Wni creek, waited on the council, and ■was favourably received. The council informed the de'Mitntion that they would approach the Public Health Department and ascertain what oould be done in the, matter.
