NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By "Tohunga.”)
The Marlborough Racing Club commences its three-day meeting to-day. Quite a large number of sportsmen went across the straits, to sec the trials, yesterday’s boat being well filled. Many c£ the horses accepted for did not make the journey.
H. Gray will bo riding at the Egmont meeting, and Deeley at Blenheim. The first day of the Egmont meeting comes up for decision to-morrow, and iho fields engaged bear a rery wholesome appearance.
In the first race there are thirteen acceptors. Royal Park looks well with 9.12. but Reformation may prove the best of the bunch. The gelding was well supported at the Manawatn meeting, but after making the pace in the early stages of the race closed up. Ho should do better to-morrow. Old Crown Pearl is amongst the acceptors, but surely must be a back number. It Munster starts it Is & pity what will happen to the others. Polthogne (with 10. S) appears to be the pick of the crowd in the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase. Paul Moore has a reputation which he may not be robbed of with his 10.13.
There are eight acceptors for the Egmont Steeplechase, of two miles and a half. Arlington heads the list with 10.4, but he should be beaten by Yellow and Black, who Is a proved chaser. The Taranaki element is very hefty, at the top of the Tawhiti Handicap, Volo (9.3), Inah (3.9). and Simonides (8.9) being at the head of affairs. Volo ray prove the best of the three over the sis furlongs.
Hallow ($.10) is one of the acceptors for the Telegraph Handicap, of five furlongs, and with Vance (9.3) may fight out the finish. There Is a lot of rough stuff in the race.
Marqueteur heads the list in the McRae Memorial, of a mile and a quarter, with 8.10, and will keep the others busy all the way. The gelding ran two good races recently, and can be relied upon to put up a decent showing to-morrow, pingle, with 8.1, should put up a decent performance. Cadet figures in the Railway Handicap with 8.10, and should do better than ho did at Palmerston. He certainly has some extra poundage, but he is not meet, ing the same class of horses by any means. The Elnglish-bred Bay-berry is in the race, but he may be short of a gallop. However, he is quite worth watchtag. H. Gray received over .£BO for his halfdozen wins at the Manawatu meeting as riding fees. Although that appears to be a lot of money for two days' work, it is really well earned. Mr Lowry did not forget to reward Gray for his win on Desert Gold in the Stakes. Desert Gold has now won .622,205 in stakes, and cups valued at ,£BOO. She holds a record which will be hard to equal by any horse, here, there, or anywhere. She has started jin’ fifty-five races, and has been unplaced on two occasions only. Sasonof, who was her victor at Palmerston, has started forty-four times and has won £17,240. He has been out of a place twelve times.
