ACCIDENT ,TO ABATAPD. • An accident which- threatened to come, 'to a fatal conclusion occurred on the •brigantine Aratapu, which is loading at the Victoria wharf, Dunedin, for Wellington. While a sling of cargo was be-ing-lowered on board the crane became entangled with the stays on the. main inastf with the result that the mast snapped below the cross-trees, and ■in falling struck a seaman standing below and knocked him overboard. The man; on regaining dry land, was found to be none the worse of his immersion. A* now mast is being made, and the vessel is expected to sail to-morrow for Wellington. , ■ ’KANNA AT NAPIER. The Union Company’s Kanna arrived In the Napier roadstead late on Tuesday .night with a full load of coal from New ; ’ castle. She was to undergo twenty-four hours’ onaranHfie. and, provided she was given her. .pratique, she was to berth at the breakwater. The Kanna is the first vessel'to arrive in Napier.with .coal from the Australian port since May, 1917. " WORK AT THE SKIP. The Kowhai and Waverley are to be brought off the patent slip to-morrow morning. The Hinemoa will go up on the cradle on Monday for four or five days for a general ovorahnl. The' New Zoalan dand African Co. ad-vises-that the' steamer Westmoreland, which - arrived at Bluff .on Wednesday from" Adelaide for Homeward loading, is dub at Wellington on the 30th from Bluff to fill up.' The vessel will leave Wellington on the 21th inst for Liverpool via Panama. " WHAKATANE ARRIVES TChDAT. On her run down the coast the liner Whakatsne. en route from New York via Auckland, has encountered strong head winds and heavy seas which has delayed her arrival at Wellington until this morning. Tho vessel will berth at the Taranaki street wharf to nnt out about 3000 tons of cargo. -She-is to sail next Thursday or Friday for Lyttelton and Dunedin to complete discharge.
