MORE PERMITS WANTED DEPUTATION TO WAIT ON TtLK GOVERNMENT. Press Amoclatlon. CHRISTCHURCH. May 7.' Mr P. Solig, president of the 'New Zealand Trotting' Association, ' at a meeting of the beard to-day mado lengthy'reference to the position ot dubs all over the Dominion. in respect' of totalisator permits, he pointed out that for some time the association had.had the subject.under review, and had. appointed representatives from amongst the board to report as tp the requirements of their district they had been working-; but now that the Minister for Internal Affairs had recognised' that - the sport of trott:ng should be further encouraged by more totalisator assistance, -he (Mr- Selig) was of tho -opinion- that- tlie association should-at oneo tako steps to endeavour to secure further permits.. That the sport was still 'growing in- the affections or the people was evidenced by tne I large attendances at.meetings', and it ! was - absolutely ' necessary tuat there should ■bo -increased ! permits so that I the .clubs who had none should have the-assistance that-they merited.; in the South- and in. the North Islands, both, from' the : meeting. and sportina point of view, niore permits were necessary, to enable clubs to cater for the interests of the sport. Trotting -clubs originally had been deprived ot three- permits that should nave tieen available tor them', and apart from these the sport of, trotting had undoubted claims for further totaiisatoi support. He' suggested that representations should he made at once to the authorities.
The president's remarks were supported by all members, and it was resolved tnat tho president, vice-presi-dents, and Mr Short be.a committee to go to Wellington to confer wtib the executive of the New. Zealand Trotting Conference and the New Zealand bports Protection League, and form a new 1 deputation to wait on Cabinet. ...:..
U nder the. rules of trotting, adopted [last. August, the new..mode of election for, members of the Trotting Association was brought into the conference to-day. . The president .explained that three South . Island members retired at the end' of the season, and this had to be decided by lot.. It was suggested that the names of members stiould be placed in a hat,, and that tho president should draw, three names. The lust,he drew .was lis own name, then Messrs Kitchingham and Thomson, j These are eligible ,for re-election, and it,is understood .will be re-nom:nated. In a discussion as to the case of a i driver who had twice started before his time .complaint was made of the present unsatisfactory starting system, ft was unanimously decided to recommend the Conference to adopt the yards system. • .
