MILITARY SERVICE BOARD

APPEALS HEARD YESTERDAY. The, Third Military Service Board continued its hearing of appeals yesterday. Mr 11. J. Berwick presided, Hm other members of the board being Messrs A. O’L. Considiiu 1 , und Mr J. Mack. Captain P. Baldwin acted as-milltary reinxficntativc. Alexander McTofjgart, agriculturist, AVaioroil, on whose behalf an appeal was lodged by Air F. S. Pope (uniler-secre-tary io the Agricultural Department; ami Mr John Brown (director' of tho A\ aierqa Training Farm), liad bis appeal dismissed, leave being granted until tho December draft is culled up. The appeal of E. G. Bender, dental surgeon, for whom Mr IE Baldwin (chairman of the Hospital Board) appealed, was adjourned for a month for reconsideration. Arthur Whiteman (Mr O. C. Marnigarb), farmer, Upper Butt, who appealed for extension of lime, as he had 50(10 sheep to shear, was granted leave till the December draft. Robert Samuel AVest, railway porter, was recommended for financial assistance. „ , , "William Binefc Brown, schoolmaster, for whom Air A. R. Atkinson appeared, is to have bis case, reconsidered in a month’s time. EXTENSION OF LEAVE. Gunner Eric Bcaven. Leave in each case was granted till November 3rd. SLAUGHTERMEN’S APPEALS.

Twenty-two appeals were lodged on behalf of slaughtermen by Mr E. C. Comer (Gear Com puny) and Mr J. Reardon (secretary to the Slaughtermen's Uniou). The appeals were adjourned till October 29th, in order that the "whole question may bo thoroughly gone into. Benjamin Burgess, slaughterman, who had not boon "working lor some time, and who was alleged to bo a frequenter of racecourses, had his appeal dismissed. The appeals of F. A. A. Jones, C. D. Truebridgo, and L. Cavroi were dismissed, and that of J. IX. Gibbs upheld. Herbert Frank Becroft, fruit carrier, Henderson, was granted extension of leave for a month, and no recommendation was made in tho case of E l . V. Schrnmka, farmer, Makara. Leave was granted Robert George Pring, clerk, till tho November draft, and the case, of Kenneth S. Grange, carrier, Upper Hutt, was adjourned to January 9th, 19X3. Extended leave was granted Daniel U. P. Leahy, Customs clerk, Wellington, till November Kth, and tho appeal dismissed.

Tho appeal by George Millar, painter, Wellington, was dismissed and appellant ordered to go into camp with the 36t'h Reinforcements. So also was that of Leslie Victor Smith, electrical engineer. Harry Clarke, joiner, Wellington, had his appeal dismissed, and Douglas King, tram conductor, Wellington, was granted three months’ leave. No recommendation was made in the case of Private Harry A. Donghi and that of Private Chas B. Kerr adjourned till October 29fch. Harold Stewart, driver, Petone, who appealed for financial assistance, had his application adjourned for three months. Private M. Verjcich was granted fourteen days’ leave, Lance-Corporal E. J. Oampibell till January stb, and William Roland till November 11th.

The board is to resume its sitting at Wellington on October 29th.
