HOSPITAL BOARD
SOCIAL HYGIENE BUREAU TO BE SET UP. A meeting of the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held yesterday, Mr U. Baldwin occupying tho chair. A letter was received from tho runlie Trustee enclosing £SOO as a legacy frpm tho lato Allen Maguiro for the maintenance of a cot or cots at the Children’s Hospital. Tho Christchurch Social Hygiene Society wroto stating that tho society had boon formed eight months ago as the outcome of a series of lectures by Dr. Platts-Millr. under the Health Department. Those interested in the movement called a private meeting o ladies, and tho committee appointed included three lady members of the Hospital Board. It was decided that tho work should ho twofold, includ.ng education and advico. Their objects were brought before tho Hospital Board, which decided to co-operate, and to finance tho scheme for six months to tho extent of £IOO, At tho end of that time tho financial assistance was extended for a further six months. Tho Health Department approves of tho scheme, and contributes 75 per cent, of cost. A matron was appointed to interview .privately persons socking advice, and instructive literature has been compiled for sale, loan, or free distribution. Patients may choose as to whether they apply for treatment to tho Society s doctor, thoir own doctor, or at the Hospital. All applications are treated contidentiallv, and cases are tabulated by number, names being kept by the ma ron alone. In addition, tho attendant gives advico to girls and women, amt mothers are instructed as to teaching their children tho facts of life. Outside tho bureau committee _ members have undertaken au education campaign, and addresses are delivered within a fifty-mile radius of ChnstA motion was carried that tho Board will agree to finance a bureau on the same lines as at Christchurch the five lady members being asked to no present at the first meeting. A motion was proposed by the chairman, and seconded by Mr Smith, that tho engineer’s estimate be spent to improve the water supply at the Children’s Convalescent Home at Belmont. The reports of the Hospital Comraittee, and tho Charitable Aid, 1 üblio Health, and Finance Committees were adopted. , Tho Hospital Committee s report stated that tho sum of £4 6s had been received from tho Karon Bowling Club for comforts for returned soldiers in the Victoria Military Hospital. Nurso Lampp was appointed sister, ’hn-ving completed four years training. The Hospital Matron W £S grantof tho usual sum of £BO, to be expended in purchasing Christmas presents for the inmates of the. Hospital. Monthly accounts for £7376 3s wero passed for payment. During tho meeting a member remarked that a good many nurses left when their training was comp eted, and he thought it was desirable to offer some inducement to remain m the service of the Board.
