MIRAMAR BOROUGH COUNCIL
HALF YEAR’S FINANCIAL STATEMENT. Tho fortnightly mooting of the Mira*' mar Borough Council was held last night, there being present the Mayor (Mr T\ Townsend), and Councillors W. Hawthorn, J. Pollock, and S. H- Uudenvood. Tho acting Town Clerk (Mr T. 0. Fox) presented tho statement of receipts and expenditure for the halfyear ending September 30th. . the rates appear at a glance to hare come in more freoly than last year, the figures for last year being £3701 and for this year £4682, In addition thero was a large increase in tho amount of arrears collected, which showed an increase of £323. Tho 30 per cent, penalty was also larger, being £65, as against £26. Building permit fees realised £55, representing buildings of a total value of well over £IO.OOO. Tho receipts from tho Karaka Bay Bus Service show an increase of £23, tho figures being £95, as against £72, although the motor vehicle has only been running for five months of this financial year. The working expenses are shown as £195. hut this figure includes tho amount expended on a quantity of petrol, of which £6O worth remained at the close of tho half-vear. The total car miles run was *3850, and the passengers numbered 11,-102. Of tho expenditure the amount spent on roadworks increased by £l4O. the payments for water wero higher by £SO, tho cost of maintaining the sewage system l decreased hy £6o. and the amount spens on making connections to tho water mains was about 50 per cent, greater. The tramway returns show that Rof only have the cash fares increased, but -Isa the amount received from the sale of concession tickets. Car mileago charges were greater, but tho net result °was that tho loss for tho halfyear was ’less than for tho corresponding period of 1016, to the extent of £7O. The borough’s share of the cost of maintenance of the Hutt road was £l2. . , _ A letter was received from the o.rarn»yaiy Traffic Manager regarding the 6,55 a.m. car from Miramar, stating that if this car started five minutes earlier than at present it would ho inconvenient for passengers who hoard at Courtenay place, outward bound for Miramar,at6 25 a.m. Thero was also only one through passenger whom the recommended alteration would suit, in view of tho fact that the- change would benefit a few at the expense of many he did not think it advisable to mako the change.
