Wylier, sou of Mr and. Airs I. Wylier, Masterton, and Corporal G. T. A. Henderson, son of -Mr J. U. Henderson, of Tauhcromkau, have died from wounds received in action in Franco.
Mr J. R. Sanson, pflicor-in-chargo ot the Discharged Soldiers' Department, left yesterday by tho Main Trunic train on a visit to the committees representing the department .in tho Auckland and Rotorua districts. The Colonial Auxiliary Forces’ Long Service Medal has been granted to Captain William Edison Cairn, of the 3rd Auckland Regiment (Countess of Ranfurly’s Own), with a service of twenty-ono years, three hundred and twelve days.
A Press Association message from Waima.to states that 31r George J?itcaithly was publicly farewcllcd. last evening, prior to transferring to tno position of inspector for the Auckland district, after twenty-two and a-liait years as headmaster at Waimato. Among those killed in action on October 4th was Private Harry Warner, youngest sou of Mr and Mrs Harry Warner, of Holloway road, Mitcficlltown. Deceased was educated at Mitohelltown School. Ho was twentyseven years of ago and unmarried. Ilia fatner, who is well-known hero in Labour circles, is at present on a visit to England. Private Wilfred Clynos Newman (killed in action) was tho fifth, son of Mr John Nowman, who died at Petono about five years ago. He was bom in Feilding twenty-eight years ago, and at the time of enlisting with the 20th Reinforcements was farming :at Waiono (Hawke’s Bay). Private Newman was married a year ago to Miss Grace Gaudin, daughter of Mr W. J. Gaudin, of Island Bay. Private S. Ga-rrcit, reported to-day as having died, of sickness, was the second son of Mr and Mrs Alfred Garrett, Johnsonvillo. The dccoased was twenty-three years of ago, and before volunteering for the front was for four year., .n the employ of _ Messrs Ross and Glcndimng, by which firm,., die was add in tho highest esteem. lie left with the 10th Reinforcements, and at tho rime of his death was a. member of the sth Regimental Baud, stationed somewhere in France.
Mias Rosina Buckman, the wellknown New' Zealand dramatic soprano, is making a great name for_ herself in the Old Country. According to recent press notices she is one of tho best representatives of “Madame Butterfly” yet seen on the English, stage, and sho has created a great impression in “Tristan and Isolde.” The “Queen” records that as Isolde, in. a performance by the Beecham Company m London, Miss Buckman “improved upon her previous interpretations of tho part, and, as recorded _at the time, those were distinguished by grace, insight, and refinement. On the occasion under notice, Miss Buckman sang with marked beauty of tone; her acting was sincere and convincing, yet free from exaggeration.” The “Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic Nows” credits Miss Buckman with “an extraordinary command of varied emotional expression and a rare distinction of style throughout her performance.”
A cable message received in Wellington announces that Sergeant ThomaSf Dick Dempster, of the wellknown Wellington shipping agents and commercial firm of Gatlue, Dempster and Co., was killed in notion m France on tho 4th inst. Sergeant Dempster enlisted for service in May, 1910, and left as a sergeant with tho I2dth reinforcements He arrived m Franco early in August. The late Sergeant Dempster was born m Carluke, near Glasgow, thirty-nine years aeo and wan unmarried. Hip notnor resides in Glasgow. Sergeant Dempster had a fine personality, and waa widely known throughout the Dominion for his bright, generous nature'and energetic disposition. His loss will be keenly felt by a large circle of friends. Deceased commenced tha business of Gathic, Dempster and Co., with Mr A. G. Cathie, in June, 1913. His brother, Mr James Dempster, of Kelburn, and Mr W. I. McCollum, of Dunedin, entered the business as partners this year.
The death has occurred at the Coronation Hospital, Cashmere Hills. Canterbury, of Private Gordon Felix HoadIcy, one of the finest marksmen in New Zealand. Previous to coming te the Dominion four years ago deceased had a vary fine record both on the outside rifle range and the immature rifle range. For five years he wn? captain of the Borough cf Portsmouth Rifle Club, and reprer-ented that club at Bisley with much suoce.ss. In 1912 ho was only seven points behind the winner cf the King's Prize, winning a silver medal a.ad King’s Badge. He also won tho Tradesmen’s Challenge Cup and tho Battalion twenty championship in 1911. In miniature tiiio shooting ho won the “Daily Alail competition, tho “Daily Telegraph competition, and Dm Lord Roberts modal (twi'o), besides innumerable other medals, spoons, cups, etc. On arrival in New Zealand lie joined the Veterans’ Defence Rifle C’ub, and represented that club wit/i success at the South Island Rifle Championship meeting.
