SOLDIERS’ EXTRAS
To the Editor, ‘■•'N.Z. Times.” Sir, —I wish to say something about the idea that lOd a- week is ample for a New Zealand soldier on active service. That is tommy-rot. As a soldier of three years’ service I say it is not enough to keep a man in cigarettes. I suppose now some knowall will rush in and tell mo cigarettes and tobacco are issued. Yes, but what quality and what quantity t The average Colonial finds it unsmokcablc, and the issue is only sufficient for a couple of days. The Array food ration is just sufficient to keep one wanting wore. It must bo helped out. The whole fault is that the powers that bo take the English standard; lOd a week is all that a Tommy gets on r.crvice. He is always on the cadge. There is a vast difference between the tastes of a Colonial and the average Tommy, and it will pay to recognise the fact.
Finally, let me recommend members of the House to try a diet of service rations and tobacco. It would do them good.—l am, etc., SERGEANT.
