MEETING OF CENTRAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. 1 ' The monthly meeting of the Central Chamber of Commerce' was' held yesterday afternoon, Mr C. M.. Luke occupying tho chair. .. Other mernbers present wore;—Messrs J. F. Atkins, W. Gandon, IH, Rogers, L. A. Edwards, Thomas Forsyth, and L. Nelson. If was stated that .the Harbour Board suggested ' ' that importers when ordering .goods should instruct their consignors to place only the importers’ registered marks on the goods, and that generally it would be an advantage fox - import-; ers to use as few marks as possible. It has been arranged that the annual conference of the Chambers of Commerce will be held on November 23tii and 29th. i
A letter was received by the Wellington branch of the New.-,'Zealand Society of Accountants, inviting--coun-cil members to an addresa.by .thn lohairman, Mr John S. Barton,- -on --"Accounting in relation to municipal and State trading,” to bo held on Thursday next at 8 p.m. in the Accountants’ Chambers.
The report of the organiser was then read. Mr C. M. Luke said they - had reason to be gratified at the result of tho organisers, efforts,... which, .represented a groat deal of work. ■ Mr L. A. Edwards remarked that the present time was very opportune for their chamber to increase its activities ; they were faced by big commercial problems, and there was no time when members were more wanted. For business men to be apthetic, to be content with making money now, and not to work for tho future, would be disastrous. Mr A. L. Hunt considered that there should be more frequent general meet, ings; they had endeavoured to arrange mon.tbly meetings to discuss business matters. Ho congratulated Mr Hunt on the good work that he had done. . Mr J. S. Atkins said, there was no doubt a vein of apathy., ran. through tho majority of Wellington business then ; he doubted if they would be able to hold the proposed meetings, which, ho would like to see hold fortnightly. The organiser’s report was adapted. Mr C. M. Luke proposed that the list of new members for election he. accepted, which was' carried. ■ ' '■ . Accounts amounting to £7l 4s 9d were passed for payment, Mr 1 Lake remarking that the balance-sheet showed a pleasing state of affairs. The council passed a resolution that the meeting views with satisfaction -the notion of the Government in reappoint, ing members of the National Efficiency Board.
